Reg Anstey retired as President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour, a position he held for more than five years. Prior to that, he was Secretary-Treasurer of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers’ Union. Mr. Anstey has been involved in the labour sector for more than 30 years. He has served on several public sector boards and committees, including the Provincial Council of the Rural Secretariat, the 2005 Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Review Committee and the Strategic Partnership Initiative. He helped with the creation of One Ocean, a liaison organization established by the fishing and petroleum industries. He has also served as Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress, chair of the GrowthWorks Atlantic Venture Fund Ltd. board, and board member of the Advisory Board of Memorial University’s Leslie Harris Centre. Mr. Anstey’s many other accomplishments included involvement at the international level. From 2002 to 2007 he was the representative for Canada at the International Labour Organization of the United Nations. During that time he served on a sub-committee of the UN General Assembly and represented North and South America on a Team of Experts for a process that led to a 2007 UN agreement on working conditions for fish harvesters. Mr. Anstey was appointed by the Premier to the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board in November 2008.
